What is the best way to get a toddler to stay still for a portrait? That is actually a trick question. Unless they are napping, it is unlikely that a young child will be willing to stay put for long. Luckily, I like movement, I like messy composition, and I like to photograph families just the way they are. I love to create images that are like slices of daily life—something a family can look at years later and say, “Yep, that was definitely us.” I know going into a photo shoot that photographing young children requires physical agility and as well as mental flexibility. My technique is to move quickly and play along or to sit back and let the action unfold—either way my camera and I are ready.
I love this gallery because I’m always in search of clients who appreciate this technique. The Taefi’s definitely fit the bill! They were so comfortable and laid back and allowed me to play creatively while they interacted with the camera and with each other. Their trust in my vision enabled me to artistically tell their family’s story—a story full of love, laughter, and of course a rambunctious toddler, an incredibly awesome big sister, and adorable little doggies.
